For our second anniversary, we went to Bergen and Flom, Norway. We saw many beautiful sites, hiked around, rode trains, a boat, ate great food and shopped a lot. We stayed most of the time in Bergen, which is a sister city with Seattle. It is a bay city famous for its fish market. The city also had several statues and monuments for its famous musicians. We saw and heard many small musical bands/groups performing around the center of the city while we were visiting. Norway is also known for its troll folklore. So we saw many troll carvings in the forest. We not only walked around the city, but also took a small train to the top of a beautiful lookout point over the city. Then we enjoyed a winding walk down through the housing area back into the heart of the city. We took a day trip to Flom, which is where Tom's dad's great grandfather came from. According to the Norwegians, it is the most beautiful place on Earth. We took a train there, walked around, took pictures, enjoyed some beer at an old Viking beer hall, ate Norwegian hot plates, and then got on a boat. While on the boat we saw the amazing fjords. We took so many pictures, it was hard to narrow down a few for the website. Amazingly, people live in the fjords. It appeared that the only way out is by boat! After a beautiful boat ride, we took a bus ride up some windy, narrow mountains where the roads have no guard rails and only turn outs for oncoming traffic! It was kind of freaky. Our final lag back to Bergen was by train. The trains there are much more comfortable than the ones we rode in Korea. For the remainder of our time in Bergen, we ate, shopped, and looked at a few old churches. The first one we looked at was a Stav church. Stav means pillar. So those churches were made with many pillars. They were also built around the time Christianity was introduced to Norway. So they have both Christian and Pagan likenesses. If you look close you can see little dragons on each roof point. We also so a church shaped like a cross and a huge Lutheran church that towered over the city. Finally, we saw the old part of Bergen. We looked at cute old houses, an old school, restaurant, mill, and some old carriages. At the restaurant, we dined on some lefse and smoked salmon. We enjoyed this entire trip with Tom's brother Scott, his fiancee Linda, and her long time friend Elisabeth.
